Principal's Weekly Newsletter

January 31st, 2012

Dear Parent,

I would like to begin by congratulating Christopher Huang for taking Third Place in the Bay Area St. Thomas More Essay Contest.  We are very proud of Christopher!

Happy Catholic Schools Week everyone!  We are in the middle of a very fun and fashionable Spirit Week hosted by the Student Council.  The themes for the rest of the week are as follows:

Tuesday, January 31st - Mismatch Day

Wednesday, February 1st - Formal Day

Thursday, February 2nd - Backwards Day

This Friday, February 3rd, will be a holiday for the students.  The teachers will be attending an Archdiocesan Professional Development Day.  Enjoy the long weekend!

The 8th grade boys basketball team will be participating in the St. Nicholas tournament from Friday, February 3rd,  through Sunday, February 5th.  Good luck and go Tomcats!

Next Monday, February 6th, is a minimum day.  Dismissal is at 12:30 p.m.  Please mark your calendars.

There will be no Homework Club or Peer Tutoring on Tuesday, February 7th, because the teachers will be having an after school meeting with Maureen Huntington, Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

The past few months have been filled with exciting events, and I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make their respective programs resounding successes. Thank you very much for your donations to our special collections during the weeks before Christmas.  Your generosity will go to help the children of the missions, the elderly poor, and the needy children of our city.  Once again, the St. Thomas the Apostle School families have shown how much they care for those in need, and we are very appreciative.

The Little Sisters of the Poor have sent us a letter of thanks and gratitude for the fourteen cases of food, paper goods, mouthwash and dental care items, as well as the over $400 in gift cards that were delivered to them for the Christmas season.  The charity of our students and families helps the Sisters to the care for their residents.  The Sisters and residents continue to pray that your kindness, which God sees, will be rewarded abundantly.

We have received a note of thanks for the items collected for San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program.  Our toys, games, and books were a part of what was distributed to over 40,000 children.  The program was able to provide gifts for individual families, hospitals, homeless shelters, battered women shelters, children with HIV, and cancer housing facilities.  The firefighters are grateful for the long running partnership we have had with them, and thank us for our continuing generosity and support.

Thank you for all your generosity during the Mite Box collections.  We received a total of $587.75 for the Holy Childhood Association.  The money will go towards helping provide food for the needy children of the world.  The class totals were:

Kindergarten – $13.60

Grade 1 – $69.24

Grade 2 – $52.24

Grade 3 – $146.87

Grade 4 – $19.00

Grade 5 – $14.75

Grade 6 – $67.20

Grade 7 – $52.11

Grade 8 – $82.23

Unmarked boxes from various grades – $70.71

Thank you for your support of the Sees Candy Fundraiser, and to Mr. Matthew Beck for putting together a great event.  The school received a total of $2,284.08 in profits.

Thank you to the Chinese School New Year Committee for hosting a fun filled variety show and dinner.  The evening was a delightful way to kick off the New Year.

Thank you to the Pancake Breakfast Committee for a wonderful event.  They worked so hard to fill our stomach with warm, fluffy goodness.  It was a great way to start a Sunday.

We are very proud of our students, and their response to the call to serve others.  We are truly blessed with a generous and selfless STA family.  As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week with its theme of Faith, Academics, and Service, it is easy to see how our students put it into practice, not only during the holidays, but throughout the year.  I would also like to thank our parents as well, who lead our students by example, making them the backbones of not only their respective families, but our STA family as well!

Looking forward, we now have the dates for our Summer School.  It will run from June 11th - July 13th.  Information will be available in the forthcoming family envelopes, and application forms will be posted on our STA website in the next couple of weeks.  Secure your spot!

Enrollment for next year is going very well.  If you know of any families who would like to join the STA community, please have them call the office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.  The slots are filling up quickly.

Please know that my door is always open.  If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call.

Have a great week!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Judith A. Borelli
